Birla Corporation migrates SAP workloads to Azure, trims costs by 60 percent
Case Study - Azure, SAP
To keep pace with customer expectations, manufacturing facilities are identifying ways to be nimble. There is an increasing emphasis on data, analytics, and AI to drive predictive insights across core production, from logistics to supply chain management. With solutions based on Microsoft Azure, Birla Corporation is migrating its SAP workloads and trimming costs.
The M.P. Birla Group is a large Indian conglomerate with major focus in cement and jute production. The cement division, Birla Corporation, produces about 1.5 million tons in its 13 plants across 5 states.
Birla Corporation had its mission-critical SAP production infrastructure running on the Oracle Solaris operating system. Many small and large manufacturing organizations and the majority of cement manufacturing businesses in India run SAP for their enterprise resource planning (ERP). An ERP system requires high compute and cannot afford any downtime.
Birla Corporation’s existing infrastructure was hosted on a private cloud environment, hampering the opportunity to scale on demand alongside the ability to innovate for delivering next-gen value and minimize the capital expenditure toward a future-ready IT landscape. Birla Corporation decided to embark upon its digital transformation journey and looked at public cloud alternatives. However, the company was concerned about a possible downtime to its business during migration as well as high-cost overhead.
The company evaluated alternatives through various cloud implementation partners, eventually partnering with MSRCosmos LLC. A Microsoft partner, MSRCosmos has been part of several enterprise-wide digital transformation initiatives involving SAP production environments. With the help of deep technical expertise of MSR on SAP and Azure, and joint consulting sessions between MSR, Microsoft, and Birla Corporation, the organization moved its mission-critical SAP infrastructure from Solaris to Linux on Microsoft Azure. This move included a seamless migration and replatforming of Oracle from Solaris to Linux.
“With their SAP and cloud-certified tools and techniques, MSRCosmos have systematically analyzed our existing SAP landscape and designed a tailored, highly available, durable and cost-efficient SAP landscape on Azure. They performed a cloud readiness assessment on our existing Solaris-based SAP systems and designed a scrupulous migration plan that saw a seamless minimized downtime migration to Linux on Azure. Within this short window, they have also incorporated Oracle upgrade to the latest 12c and offered us the latest OS version with OS hardening required for SAP. The overall system performance and reliability on Azure is better than what we experienced on-premises,” says Partha Bhattacharya, Sr. General Manager at SAP.
“With a very compelling value proposition built around optimized infrastructure and SAP solution configuration, we were highly confident about positioning Microsoft Azure as the right choice to address the needs of Birla Corporation for their existing and future SAP requirements. We conducted multiple migration mocks involving Birla Corporation’s Dev/Test/UAT instances from their third-party private cloud environment to Azure and established a very low downtime for the final production migration that helped them go live with their SAP environment on Azure faster than they had estimated,” notes Raghavendra Prabhu, Sr. Vice President, Global Sales & Solutions at MSRCosmos LLC.
With the successful migration of its SAP workloads to Azure, Birla Corporation experienced a 60-percent reduction of costs by moving the existing SAP production infrastructure to Azure from the existing private, on-premises environment. There was improved SAP performance despite allocation of lower compute resources on Azure, based on the latest CPU architecture and premium storage options. Finally, the migration created opportunities to accelerate innovation with Azure data and AI services.
“We were looking to migrate our on-premises SAP landscape to the cloud by realizing the advantages of the cloud. The MSRCosmos team showed great agility to help us not only understand the advantages of Microsoft Azure, but also showed excellent technical skills to come up with a migration approach with minimal downtime,” says Debasis Behura, Assistant Vice President, IT, Birla Corporation.
