AWS to Azure migration of eCommerce application for a large foods processing company

About the client

Large food processing company offering a vast collection of high-quality meat and seafoods through retail stores and online e-commerce at the most affordable prices.

Business Challenge

Our clients’ application teams were considering standardization of their deployment platform and practices for applications across the IT. The eCommerce application managed by the client was one of the critical applications that ran APIs enabling the communication and integration between client’s online ordering portal with their SAP Core and delivery partners for fulfillment. This application was built and deployed completely on OSS stack on AWS by their incumbent application partner but did not follow the cloud recommendations, and best practices around security, networking, and architecture. Client decided to revisit their existing cloud platform for their eCommerce application and also evaluate a partner with the right competencies and experience to migrate out of Amazon web services (AWS).

Evaluation of the right cloud migration partner

The client was seeking a partner who had strong capabilities in data center (DC) migration & modernization, open-source competencies, and a good understanding of AWS platform and architecture. MSRcosmos was selected after a rigorous evaluation process owing to its Advanced Specialization in Linux and OSS DBs and a strongly complementing Advanced Specialization in Modernization of Web Applications on Azure, covering both OSS and Azure PaaS.

Solution

MSR warmed up to the challenge and demonstrated extreme agility by quickly bringing their Azure Cloud Architects with AWS skills to engage with the customer and their incumbent partner. MSR team conducted multiple sessions involving Microsoft, client, and incumbent partner for a detailed discovery and assessment of AWS networking, infrastructure, and PaaS services consumed by client’s eCommerce application.

MSR’s Azure expert team crafted a sound cloud migration approach and strategy to modernize the eCommerce application. MSR team successfully migrated from AWS to Azure IaaS and PaaS components with tight integration to SAP applications.

A few key highlights are as follows

  • Use case for LAMP stack on Azure comprising of Networking, Compute, and Storage along with Azure database for MySQL and Azure cache for REDIS
  • As-Is migration to Azure IaaS and PaaS services with minimal downtime
  • A first for any customer in Retail industry to migrate business-critical applications from AWS to Azure

Benefits

  • Tight security controls and improved application performance
  • Reduced the total cost of ownership
  • Faster time to market
